That life is there to be lived. Think about how Colin is wasting away until Mary finds him and forces him to live his life instead of lying in bed feeling sorry for himself. How as the children spend more time in the garden using it instead of leaving it as a lifeless memorial to Colins mother it becomes more vibrant and wildlife becomes more abundant. Or how Mary starts as a lonely sallow child who blossoms through her friendships with Colin and Dickon and her time in the garden. It is basically a story about living in the here and now and taking every opportunity that comes.
